Mammoth Cave, KY – As part of the new visitor center exhibits at Mammoth Cave National Park, artist Matthew Gray Palmer has created a tactile representation of a selection of passages in the vicinity of the Historic Tour route at the cave. “The goal of the piece is to allow people to get a sense of the complexity of the cave” says Rick Toomey, Director of the Mammoth Cave International Center for Science and Learning. “Visitors are able to see and/or feel how the cave has passages at different levels which cross over and under each other in a complex manner. They can also get a sense that cave passages vary in size and shape.” The scale of the sculpture is approximately 1:900 and depicts approximately four miles of cave passages.
